Mozambique Something Different
Need to know what to see while visiting Maputo Mozambique, here are some awesome places to start.
1. Maputo Elephant Reserve(Reserva Especial de Maputo).
Found from flickr
If you’re into animals the Maputo Elephant Reserve is the place for you, just a short while south of Maputo, the capital city, lies a massive 50,000-hectare reserve. Once a sanctuary to large herds of elephants and an abundance of other wildlife, including the white-rhino. Sadly due to poaching during the Mozambique civil war, the entire population of the white rhino was wiped out. Since then, however, through careful conservation efforts, the wildlife population has begun to recover and the reserve now offers some of the best opportunities to see some of the most incredible animals our world has to offer.
2. Núcleo De Arte
Found from flickr
One of the friendliest atmospheres in Maputo and the place to visit if you wish to experience the local art culture housing plenty of workshops and studios filled with local artists who are always friendly and willing to chat with you while they work. You will really enjoy wondering around here if you have some time to kill.
3. Maputo Museums
Found from flickr
If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the history and culture of Mozambique, why not visit one of the many local museums ranging from natural history, historic war memorabilia and even beautiful art.
4. Visit the markets in Maputo
Found from flickr
A great way to spend some time in a new country is to visit a local market, of which Maputo has many. The central market can be located in the building that was constructed over 100 years ago.
Another great market is Xipamanine Market where many traditional African remedies, medicines and even VooDoo artifacts can be found, Sadly Xipamanine Market is only open on a Sunday.
If you’re craving some seafood, you could always pay a visit to the Maputo Fish Market where you’ll have a choice between the freshest fish, lobster, prawns, calamari and crab selection of the day, sold per kilogram and can even be cleaned and cooked on request, isn’t that great.
5. See The Iron House(Casa Do Ferro)
Found from flickr
This place was designed by the same person that gave us the Eiffel Tower, it was intended to be the personal residence of the Governor of Maputo and was actually constructed in Belgium. But could not be used for its intended purpose due to the hot tropical conditions of Maputo.
This place is really awesome to behold.
